Meet Haz

Meet Haz

I've always drawn, but I actually started doing it full time after I finished studying Fashion Design in 2013. I started painting when I returned from my ski season in Whistler! And sold works/ did commissions for a long time, quite sporadically, but took it seriously in 2021 and really started to put all my effort in, living off it full time.

What is your artist background?
I trained as a fashion designer when I left school, where I learnt how to draw, illustrate and paint. I never pursued fashion, but I took the skills I learnt while studying and started painting after I returned from a season in Whistler - and it just took off from there! I started painting abstracts, which a gallery in Sydney picked up and sold. Then, I started posting everything to Instagram... i mean everything! I then trained as an actor and after graduating, I started taking my art seriously and got a studio, honed in on my style and starting selling with a gallery and online!

When did you start doing your art?
I've always drawn, but I actually started doing it full time after I finished studying Fashion Design in 2013. I started painting when I returned from my ski season in Whistler! And sold works/ did commissions for a long time, quite sporadically, but took it seriously in 2021 and really started to put all my effort in, living off it full time.

When did you start your entrepreneur journey?
Properly in 2021 after graduating. I painted from home until I could afford a studio and for the first few years I shared a space with a few other artists, until three years ago, when I was able to finally move into my own studio.

How do you describe your artwork style?
Textured, energetic, playful

Have you always done your field of art or was there other types of art that you have done?
I have a few different styles! I love abstracts and have two different styles of abstracts which I dip into every now and then, but for now Im focusing on my still life pieces/ tablescapes!

What is the best/ideal environment for you when creating your artwork?
I always listen to music or podcasts when I paint - I need to have that stimulation to distract the judgemental part of my brain - lots of crime podcasts!! My ideal space is my studio and it has to be clean and organised (Im not a messy painter... i like order and routine haha). Love a sunny day in London, where the sky is blue and I have a hot matcha before getting into it. Also just good vibes - I follow how Im feeling and if Im in the mood to paint, I just wont stop.

Who is your hero? / Who do you admire the most? And why?
My hero... might sound really boring, but i admire my parents the most - they are so supportive and always there for me and have always embraced all my creative pursuits since i was a child and I think without their encouragement and total belief i wouldnt have been able to take the path I have. And they are full of fun and very curious people and i love that.

What values are important to you?
Honesty, kindness, ambition, curiousity, and playfulness.

Any advice for aspiring NZ artists?
I think just stick at it, and do a little bit every day to get better. Also don't be afraid to put yourself out there! It's the best way to learn and you have to be your own cheerleader! Also don't be afraid to pivot and experiment with new ideas - you don't have to stick to a style if it's not bringing you joy! I have changed my style so many times and will continue to do so as I grow. We are meant to change and discover new things, so allow yourself the freedom to do that. Also not everything you make is going to be good... and thats okay!!

What was the inspiration behind your artwork for your PieceHouse puzzle?
It was inspired by lush lunches by the ocean, fresh food and sharing a meal with your favourite people. Also love fresh blooms and lots of colour. A joyful weekend!! Haz is the amazing artist that created the Midday Magic puzzle.

What do you do to help keep your mental health in a positive place?
I love to exercise - most morning, either pilates, yoga or a walk. Getting out in nature, painting is a huge part of my mental health practice - I find it incredibly meditative—and I often find writing as well - any creative outlet really!! I love a routine, and think for painting, I treat it like a 9-5... I get up, head into my studio and try and get working and that is great for my mental health.
