Meet Finn

New Zealand artist, designer, illustrator and painter Finn Gerry Wilson. Finn has used many materials to create his art, from skate decks to surfboards, recycled car doors, walls and traditional canvas, but what remains consistent is his unique point of view. Drawing inspiration from street and skate culture, Finn throws in his own twist, often giving us the unexpected, which is where the magic happens.

What is your artist background?
I’m a self taught illustrator/designer. I mainly specialise in digital illustration and mural paintings.

What city in New Zealand do you live?
Auckland

When did you start doing your art?
I started young, been painting from around 2 years old. I haven’t stopped creating art since the day my rents introduced me to a paint brush.

When did you start your entrepreneur journey?
I dropped out of uni a year into my graphic design degree when I was 18 (2014). That’s when I started my journey.

How do you describe your artwork style?
The best word to describe my style would probably be “whimsical”. I try to make my work fun and interactive.

Have you always done your field of art or was there other types of art that you have done? If so, what types?
I tend to stick with illustration and painting although I vibe with most art forms and I’m always open to trying new things.

What is the ideal environment for you when creating your artwork?
Music is a must, I find it difficult to work without it. My playlists dive into most genres and it depends on the mood I’m in. Although I don’t really vibe with country.

Who is your hero? And why?
I don’t have a hero. I’m inspired by many amazing people. Ranging from family and friends to artists, musicians, athletes. I have a looong list of people who inspire me.

What values are important to you?
Loyalty and respect/self respect have always been pretty crucial values.

Any advice for aspiring NZ artists?
Be yourself, back yourself and stay weird.
Finn Gerry Wilson, puzzle artwork behind the scenes, in the making. NZ puzzle illustrator.
What was the inspiration behind your artwork for your PieceHouse puzzle?
My inspiration for this puzzle was a selection of “some” famous NZ locations that should be ticked off the list, if you were to do a roady from the top of the country to the bottom. Finn is the artist that created the Classic As puzzle, which you can view here.

What do you do to help keep your mental health in a positive place?
Exercise, drink lots of water, surround myself with people who keep me grounded and happy. Talk to family/mates if I’m not feeling 💯. And obviously create artwork!

Is there a song that you would love to be on the playlist that goes with your puzzle?
A recent banger I came across - “Redstripe Rhapsody” by Lausse the Cat.
