What is your artist background?
I drew and painted from an early age and on leaving school took an apprenticeship as a Stereo Engraver (Photo Engraver/ Photolithographer) attending art school doing lettering. A career in the design and print industry followed, including running my own prepress and design studio for many years.

When did you start doing your art?
I returned to oil painting properly over 20 years ago after finishing my prepress business.

When did you start your entrepreneur journey?
At around the same time. Exhibiting regularly at various galleries.

How do you describe your artwork style?
Realism, but not photo realism, I like to show my own interpretation in the work.

Have you always done your field of art or was there other types of art that you have done?
I have always painted realistic paintings, but have also dabbled in abstract, pop art and cartoons in the earlier part of my life.

What is the best/ideal environment for you when creating your artwork?
I like to paint what is around us in everyday life. Often travelling around to discover new places in NZ to paint. When I find something the fascinates me, I take photos and do a few quick sketches. I then create the rest back in my studio, painting straight onto canvas trying to capture the moment and feeling I had when I originally found the subject. I enjoy listening to music while painting and as a hobby away from art also play a bit of guitar and piano.

Who is your hero? / Who do you admire the most? And why?
There are many artists I admire such as JM Turner, John Constable, William Hogarth, Andrew Wyeth and the French impressions. But my personal favourite is Edward Hopper (1879- 1968) an American artist who painted American urban life of the early 20th century, capturing the atmosphere, space and the loneliness of modern life.

Any advice for aspiring NZ artists?
Follow your passion but also take time to learn the basics and improve your craft to produce the best pieces you can. But most of all remember to enjoy it.

What was the inspiration behind your artwork for your PieceHouse puzzle?
The simple kiwi summer of spending time at the bach, relaxing with family and friends.

Graham is the artist that created the Summer Days puzzle which you can view here.

What do you do to help keep your mental health in a positive place?
I’m lucky that I have my art and playing music to keep me in a good frame of mind. Keeping in touch and socialising with family and friends regularly is a must.
